Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training

The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training is responsible for the protection of miners, enforcement of rules and regulations and protection of property. This is carried out in the best interest of the coal miners and the people employed within the State of West Virginia. The agency consists of a Mine Emergency Response Team that responds to mine emergencies statewide. The Mine Emergency Response Team consists of personnel from the individual regional offices. Each regional office is equipped with a trained mine rescue team.

The agency houses a team of inspectors that oversee underground, surface, electrical and diesel operations. The inspectors are the enforcement of the agency, which enables them to address safety issues, write violations and investigate areas of concern in case of a mine mishap.
